Why it pays to study endgames

I'd been struggling a pawn down in a knight endgame for some time, but finally found a favourable opportunity to save the draw. A knowledge of both N+P and K+P endings was required - but it can help you save points!

I checked, I don't think he can force a win by sacrificing the lead pawn.

That is nice. To me it would be so unnatural to sac another pawn, already down one, but in this case the pawns are doubled, which can often be blockaded easier. But doubled pawns in a king and pawn endgame are normally winning but here the doubled pawns are too close to making a queen (if one pawn was on the seventh for example it could make waiting moves).
