Kaupthing Open, Luxembourg. 2008 Round 7 of 9.

see the live games here
http://www.lecavalier.eu/open/toma/web/broadcast.htm

After losing on Sunday morning in round 2 Yelena has fought back to be just 1 point behind the leaders. A good result today playing white against GM Bartosz Socko would put her in a good position for the final two rounds.

There are 2 in the lead on 5, 9 on 4.5 and 12 including Yelena on 4.
Unfortunately the lack of information from the official site means that apart from results the only games pgn files posted have been from the 7 top boards transmitted live each day. So no details of how Yelena got back into contention are available.

As before the relay will be updated every 15-20 mins depending on speed of play and quality of feed from Luxembourg.

timings are initial 90 min @ move 40 add 30min plus add 30sec for each move from the start.

feel free to comment on or ask questions about the game

Ah good to see this back. One interesting moment already, black deciding to exchange bishops. Marin in Secrets of attacking chess book, showed a nice Tal v Kortchnoj game where black respnded to Nxp with pxN.

I don't see what problems black is going to have in this position, but Yelena does hopefully.

b2-b3 followed by Bb2, Kh1 and f4 maybe? I was thinking that Re1 didn't fit in with this, but it does discourage f6...

Black can respond to this wih c5 and d4, but this does put pawns on same squares as his bishop, and white get ne4. Maybe white got more to work with than I thought at first.

Unsuprisingly had nothing to do with my rubbish plans. Now 13... Rh8 14Bd2 Qc7 15 f4 with Re3 -H3 to come. I am more optimistic for a good outcome to this game, Yelena plays these sorts of positions well.

This is really funny, can't get a move right even with 50% chance. Yelena has carefully avoid playing pawn f4, which would make her own bishop dead. I have a feeling going to see this game again, where she will use it to explain how to attack properly. :)
