Recently I've come across this fascinating version of chess. I've had an opportunity to play it and lost. Apparently I need more practice, but the concept itself is beautiful!

That is awesome!  But what rules apply?  I mean, what is a straight line in this most non-Euclidean of geometries?  Oh, and where can I get a board?

Wow. I've seen 4-way before, but not 3. I wonder how the pieces move here, there are no straight lines. I'd like to see 4-way chess here on the website.

Nice!  There's 96 squares on it - mmmm?  Gratz to who ever invented it.

What seems odd to me about that your half of your pawns can never advance toward one side of one of your opponents.

Maybe one half of one's pawns advances to the nearest adjacent corner, and the other half to the other, but with three full sets of pieces that might never happen ;)

In my country there is even a  4 or 6 way chess - I cann't remember exactly, and it was nominated as one of innovation of the year 2007. I'll try to look for the for the picture and post it in this site once I got. i just curious how one can win the game if say some players collaborate to put the other -who doesn't - down.

Ok Erik, time to start programming. First one to checkmate gets the choice of all the first losers pieces {or} moving twice each time for the rest of the game Cool .

Please, let the Chess.com folks get chess960 ready before they get to other projects!

Check out the sides of the board: white's ranks are numbered 1-4, green's are 5-8 and red's are 9-12.

Ok, but I still don't get it. Will it look like the 1.e4, Nh10, c6

Please give me an example.

I recently bought one of these to play with my two kids. It's hilarious ... absolute mayhem. In the UK they stock them here: http://www.mastersgames.com/cat/board/chess-3-player.htm

For those who asked, the notation is a little weird. There are 12 files (A-L). The 3 sides are lettered [A-H], [HGFEIJKL], & [LKJIDCBA] respectively. The ranks then go [1-8], [1,2,3,4,9,10,11,12] & [8,7,6,5,9,10,11,12] again on each side respectively. This gives each "square" a unique reference. So yes, 1.e4, Nh10, c6 is perfectly playable, but you'll probably be laughing too much to record the moves.

Stupidly I bought a set with red and black pieces and being colour blind this caused unimaginable chaos and random carnage. The kids have taken pity on me and let me play with the white pieces for now.

Heartily recommended, definitely one for Chess.com to put on the list once 960 is done.
