I've been spending time using the Chess Mentor recently.. and the finish to this game makes me think of those lessons where you have to play an 'oddball' move to progress.. Take a look, black has just progressed to g3. Can you predict whites next move?

White left the hanging knight hoping for 18) ..h6xg5, to clear the h file but Black ignored it playing 18) ..g3 instead.

White then played.. (SCROLL THROUGH THE GAME TO SEE TH FINISH..)

Hope you enjoyed that, please leave a reply! :-D

Happy New Year!!!

Hi Ivan,

19. Nh7 is a stunning move and it worked out very well indeed, but I also think it should simply lose to 19...g2+! If you play 20.Kxg2 then 20...Nxd4+ wins the queen.

Interesting position though : )

Thanks very much for the responses everyone!!

The f2+ and g2+ threats really made this such a pleasing mate..

I'd actually been planning to only use the h file rook and my queen for mate, so wasn't too worried about f2+, lose the bishop and just sit behind the pawn.

G2+ response was simple - take pawn with the king.. BUT..Streetfighter, you're absolutely right - I'd not seen that vulnerability!! I'd've lsot against you from there.

Thanks guys :-D

black could've done knight takes pawn at d4, with black's bishop attacking white's rook and black's knight attacking white's queen...

Thanks Tiger ;-D

I realise I was lucky to get the mate.. the temptation of the 'free' knight swung it in my favour, deflecting the diagonal threat.

<Phew!> Lol
