The game features me putting what I think is a pretty convincing crunch on my opponent's pet system... A nizmo larsen double fianchetto. I obtain a pawn and a positional edge with a well-timed pawn push. Accurate play on my part vs some passive play on his part snowballs my positional advantage into a crush, even while the material situation remains unchanged. I hope you enjoy it & the annotations. (although of course as soon as I publish I see errors in the annotations...*sigh*)
Very good game of yours, and excellent comments, i enjoyed it a lot. I would like to add little more details to your nice job:
- engine consider 15...Nxe3 as a best move clearly due to taking initiative and decent attacking chances for black. It is clearly this line:
15...Nxe3 16. fxe3 Rxf1 17. Qxf1 Rf8. If white will take with bishop he will lose tempoes, because his rook and queen need to get out anyway. Black has f line plus all other advantages you mensioned in your annotation, white has no counterplay at all, g3 pawn became very weak, and so on. So, for attacking player 15...Nxe3 is clearly best move, but for positional player there are very good other alternatives, so you chose the best move for yourself, leading to positional advantage you understand and can exploit (your plan with gaining center superior), so dont warry about engines choices, what does they know? But you should think about changing your engine to something better - for rybka 2.* or rybka3 for example, because -0.72 is very incorrect evaluation, so it is not the best choice to rely on this engine, if you want really good analyses.
UPDATED:
If your opponent played c2-c4 before Ne2-c3-e4 manuever he was standing good enough to play level game, because black have no direct means to use space advantage (yet) and white have counterchances in most lines. So, mistake is not in placing the knight at e4, mistake is in not covering e4 square in advance - that is pure positional mishit, maybe he just forgot about, it is hard to believe he didn't knew that basic rules you explained in your annotations about knight outposts.
21. Qe1 was simple move to kick your rook away, because you had no move to protect your rook and d2 knight covers c2 pawn. After Qe1 white wasn't in losing position, just pawn down, but all game is ahead and position pretty equal, so pawn is not decisive yet, until endgame comes. And before endgame comes, complex tactics or attack can finish the game much faster. So been in such a position next time don't evaluate it as theoretically won, as you are saying in annotations, or you may be very disappointed by concequences. I lost a lot of 'won' games due making not best moves (but without any mistake!), because i was guided by the wrong plan - plan of playing 'won' game, which wasn't won even close, and that plan blinded me to the best winning moves, which i missed one by another. So, you should mark 21. Nf1? as a serrious mistake, which get white into losing position.
nice annotations, nice game. Makes me consider putting down my tactics book and picking up a strategy book.
Thanks tarikhk...
Catalyst_kh. I agree with all your notes 100%. During the game I fully expected the simple Qe1 and I think my response would be the simple Rf8 -- I never imagined he'd let me keep my rook on his second rank. Nf1 was a big strange blunder.
Don't worry about me losing won games. I've learned that lesson the hard way. And now when I have a "won" position, I concentrate harder and take nothing for granted. If I do sound over-confident in the annotations... it's because they're written after the game is over, and I know even I can't blunder it away then
Thanks for your thoughtful comments.
I'm sooo tired of reading 1300 - 1400 players show off crappy games. This was a real treat and will keep me coming back to this topic. Thanks for a great game and great comments!
Thanks schlagle! I appreciate the feedback a lot!
Erik and his hopeless staff should all resign after this mess .. why let 4000 members onto a site that hasn't been tested properly .. I would say the egos are too big which shows through with the moderators
What?? That was outta left field... Are you mentally challenged? No offense intended, that's just really my only explanation for that. =/
