    12. a3 is usually a smart move when your opponent tries to smother your bishop with a pawn rush

    That would have been 10. a3, 12.a3 and he takes the hanging knight. I agree, I do that a lot (very common blitz move), harder to do three moves in advance though, might have been an okay idea.
