Chess Basics for Beginners

Hi Chess World,

Can anyone please help my friend understand the basic rules about castling?  He claims to be rated 1990 USCF, but started to abuse chess.com and me because he was unable to castle.  It made me laugh but maybe you can help my friend out by telling him the rules.

Here is our dialogue:

Actually the rule in question is a little bit apocryphical. Only those who have opened a chess book that mentions the rules of the game AND read that particular part are aware of it. The rest learn it when a situation that this rule must be applied occurs over the board and their opponent happens to know it.
