It was the second round of the 2006 Iowa State Junior High Team Championship Tournament, and I had won my first game. I was white on board three when I got paired up with Patrick. He was much older than I. I am surprised at myself for seeing such a classic version of the smothered mate!

I then went on to go 4-1, my only loss being to the State Junior Champion, a 1756-rated player. I won second place in the individual section!
