They shouldn't try dutch defense against a dutchie :-)

I played the dutch defense a lot by the way, because of the name of course, and because i never studied d4 openings. My success rate however is very moderate and i am now studying other responses to d4.

EXACTLY the same thing happened with me once. The bad thing was that I was black.

I had a win with this in a 30 minute tournament game against a 160BCF rated player (circa 1800Fide?).

I thought 4.e4 was considered a valid alternative

    4...Rh7 and matters aren't clear (5.Qh5+ Rf7 6.Nf3 Nf6 7.Qg6 Nc6! 8.Bxg5 fe4 9.Ne5 Nxe5 10.de5 hg5 11.ef6 is messy, and probably somewhat better for Black).

Thanks, I'll look at 4..Rh7. I've always played 4..Bg7 up to now, which I thought was ok, e.g.

4.e3 is better than 4.e4, which gives no advantage to white against correct play.

Thanks for the advice. If this happens again I'll remember it :)
