Here is a game in the French poisoned pawn winawer variation. This is my first time ever playing this as black, so I probably made some opening inaccuracies here and there, but the finish is nice.

nice game.ive never won playing black in the poisened pawn variation. only played it twwice though. it has to be so accurate to be played correctly!

Is there a g6 variation or is it always recommended to give up the g7 pawn?

g6 variation is great - giving up a pawn is never recommended ;)

I just plugged this game into rybka, it didn't like a bunch of my moves, so of course don't take this game as the theoretically best way for black to play this variation... that would be poor.

however, do note the power of a rook on the 7th.

threatens to capture on a3. (the immediate Nxa3?? would fail to Ra2! when white gains a rook on the 7th after 22...Nb5 23. Rxa7

Nxa7

Instead of 30. ... Ra2, you can play 30. ... Nf2+ 31. Ke1 Rc1+ 32. Kxf2 d2 and there's no good way to stop the promotion.

cool. just wondering seems the poisened pawn var gives black the best counterplay. Ive seen GM games where poisen pawn var was played and you and white both played firly accurate although not perfectly accurate, as you obviously didnt know thr best correct line, as i wouldnt either, although i do have a jist of it.
