This is an interesting and original struggle which would have been spoilt if either player used a computer like some do around here ;)

I haven't come across any players who use a computer.  Also, I didn't think this game was very good.  What was White trying to accomplish with that queer-looking opening?  16...Bxc4 was a bit off, I thought, though you couldn't go wrong really from that position.  Simply retreating the bishop would have been fine as White had no way to maintain his extra space with those weaknesses in his camp.  Attacking was fine, but I would have preferred to let White slowly hang himself.

If you think that 16...Bxf4 was incorrect you have to come up with a refutation.

I posted this game because it has unusual themes. It is not a common game. 16...Bxf4 is a good speculative sacrifice which would probably fail againt a weak computer. That was my original argument. Computers kill creativity.

I didn't say it was losing, just that I think it was a bit off.  I don't think you needed to risk the speculative sacrifice as you've called it since you had a vastly superior position and White didn't have a good way to solidify.

I disagree. I think that black must sacrifice after 16.g4 or risk ending up in a losing position. What 16th move would you have made?

16...Be4 forces your opponent to let you keep your pawn and post or to blast the center open for your rooks.

After 16...Be4 there is 17. Nf3 threatening to win the pawn on d3. White can defend with the king going to f2, the rook on e1 and the bishop dropping to c1 if needed.  It's more like white solidify they position and not black.

After 17 Nf3, then I like...Bxf4, as it leaves White with fewer options now.

The N on f3 is an important defensive piece as it prevents the main theme of the original 16...Bxf4 sacrifice which is the black queen cutting off the white king on the f file and the threat of Re8+.

I think the knight on f3 is more of a hinderance for White with your queen on f4 and bishop on e4 along with Re8 and Ne5 coming.

By sacrificing on f4 at move 16 I was able to achieve a lot more than in your variation. Within 2 moves the white king was stuck in the center and the white queen under attack.

You seem to be taking my opinion as a personal attack.

Not at all. I would be interested to know what in my answers made you believe that.

just curious, why didn't white play 18 gxf5? i can't see any immediate refutation, and white is in trouble already, so why not?

After 18 gxf5 there is a nasty check with a rook on e8.
