Sad..... but when d4+ was played g5 is better even though it is countered by h4.

Why not 4...G6?  Was that a blunder?

Red_Feather,

Moving the pawn forward to block the check does no good and loses big material. Playing 4...g6 results in not only the queen taking the undefended e-pawn, but also forking the King and Rook.
