An unexpected kings gambit variation lead to an 8-move checkmate.
Ya I knw dis trap bt on King's side seen 4d first time
It's basically Legall's Mate with a couple of extra moves thrown in, isn't it?
lol very nice =D go calum dude thingy.
rainbow rising, your sequence didn't come up, could you try re-posting please?
I think best for black is
6...dxNe5 then if
7QxBg4 Nxc2+ etc.
I believe Legalls mate only works if black has developed neither knight. A generality perhaps, but like most generalities, generally true.
Why does it keep doing that?!?!
I see...
So, Nd4 wasn't necessarily an auto loss move, black just had to be careful :)
Thoughts?
Rainbow,
I sympathize with your board posting problems, and have had my own frustrations.
Instead of 8...Nxa1, in your blue line, 8...Ne3+ screams. Even 8...Nf6 (rather than 7...Nf6) picks up a tempo and development and then the rook (really just the exchange).
I think my main point holds. That Legall's mate only works if black's knights are undeveloped. Lots of variations though, and it remains a good pattern to know. I have only used it once OTB, in 52 years of play.
Quite right Pawn, Ne3+ does scream!
Do you see that OP? By Nd4 you thought black was lost, I played a little further and thought black was ok, but it turns out there are plenty of pitfalls for white!
I played this otb this week. The pattern here is one that everyone should memorise. I managed to play this game in a 20 +30 game and I had 23 minutes on my clock at the end because I had seen this pattern before.
I felt sorry for the guy, pretty embarrassing to be caught by such a well known trap.
I was wondering why not Ne3+ for a sec.. then scrolled down...
