This game is not only real and teaches you about an opening trap, it is entertaining, too.

 You won't believe the ratings

if 5. . .  Be7 then 6. Qe7+ Qxe7  7. Nxe7  Kxe7

Black can't castle and the material is even.  Not terrible, but quite a few people wouldn't play this.  Also, Black could have been embarassed by the situation.

um sorry this is not the line

if 5...Be7 ,then 6.Nxd8 ,,,, black has no Queen

if 5.... Qe7 then 6.Nxe7

it's a well known trap and u won't easily get it unless u see it before

Badenstein, black loses the queen here.  I've gotten people with the same trap.  My question is, why do people play Petrov's defence if they don't know this trap?

I don't understand this. A player has worked hard enough to become a 1600 (nothing extraordinary, but not a beginner either) and decides to take up a new opening. No matter where he decides to look for info on the Petroff, this trap has to be one of the first things mentioned. Does this mean that the player spent less than 15 min. of research before taking up a new opening in a game? What kind of strategy is that?

Black can play Knight takes Knight right away on move 3 but has to play Queen e7 on the next move. Then when white plays QxN Black plays d6 and wins whites Knight and material is back to close to even(down a pawn instead of losing his queen). 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 Nxe4 4. Qe2 Qe7

5. Qxe4 d6  6.d4 d6xe5

That game shows a common trap in the russian defense. Black loses his queen to the knight after 5 . Nc6 check  so material is not even there.  Be7 is answered by NxQ.

Better for black on move 3 is d6 pushing whites Knight back and then black can take whites pawn on e4 without hassles.

True you can get that attack in the ruy lopez but again black has to play very badly. Nxe4  for black in the spanish is very playable(the open variation) but if black does not move his Knight to the correct square after Re1 he is  going to have a very difficult game.

Never mind the analysis, vj1 -- let's get to the nub of it.  I just love the feeling when somebody walks into something like that.  Nice one!

Black could do Qe7 Qe4 and f6 white  can't stop the Night getting captured by the  pawn.
