Today I played a fantastic game, which allowed me a Bishop and Queen sac to mate in 7 moves.
My opponent is a very good player, I have to say he wins most of our matches, and we always play very good and interesting games.I'm posting this because it doesn't happen to me that often. I wish...
What do you think?
gimly
isn't 20 Bf3 mate?
No it isn't. It's just a check because the white knight can go to g4 preventing king's capture.
pay no attention to me. For some reason i saw the bishop move as some double check (not to mention you played that move in game and, well, it isn't mate obviously)...bad eyes lately. either way, nice game.
but it is mate in 2 if knight would take bishop.:
20.Bf3+
21.Nf3 (knight takes bishop)..Qf3 Queen takes knight and checkmate

By the way there was no need to give up the queen, that was not really a sacrifice, it was simply a mistake ;-)
Can you explain please?
The ideia of 19...Qxf5 is to prevent the knight on f5 to go to g3.
Anyway, under time pressure (i ended the game with only 20 seconds left, although it was a quiet run as I saw the mate; my opponent still had a couple of minutes), this sacrifice seemed a very elegant one and it led to a forced mate!
Btw 21.Nxf3 is an illegal move. Not to mention that black Q is gone after 20.exf5.
Sorry for the double post but I forgot one variation.
I'm still convinced that 19...Qxf5 was the best way to end the game. as one cannot assume that his opponent wont make his best move.

With such a dominating position at move 18, why not go for elegance over utility? Nice mate.

Just another nitpick I'm afraid, but 21...hxg4 gives mate next move.
Other than that, fantastic game!
Thank you for your comment. You're right!
I guess under time pressure I wanted to follow a line where I knew exactly what my opponent would play. And that's why I preferred to check and make the white king dance to my music, and did not think of that line.
So with 21.hxg4 being the best move, the Bishop+Queen sac is a great sac!!

Great game and sacrifice - even if the finish could have been more precise

I really liked the mate but like you showed the queen sac didn't really need to take place. But yea nice
Eh? I thought the analysis showed that the queen sac was necessary and lead to a forced mate!

Thank you very much for you analysis.
I really enjoyed this game and the Q sac is a great sac.
I now know there are some better lines and I could have played it better, and thanks to comments like yours I'm learning something.
Beautiful game!
