any thoughts on why his sacrifice would be helpful he's too good to throw pieces away and could i have finished it more quickly?

You could of taken a queen and rook with 35.Rxf7+

He had the wrong pieces for an open position I guess.

I guess 28 Rdg1 was probably a bit faster.  But you played it fine.
