Ok, I posted this little example of when I almost got my ass severly whipped, to show you beginners like me, when you should be reminded to watch out for a stalemate. If you didn't already check for it, be reminded to do so, if you're about to win and your opponent makes a totally pointless move, and offer. Probably, this move was done because there was no other option. Take that piece out and, boom, Stalemate!

Indeed, that was my point. I was white and expected loss when I 36. a5, "took my last breath". But then, the huge blunder by my pawn-hungry opponent saved me! The lesson to learn for the would-be-winner is to wake up and look for stalemate situations, if not sooner, at least when the opponent makes a seemingly pointless move like 36. a5.

I messaged with him after, and he knew about the mate, but was probably just unthoughtful and thought he could grab one last pawn before doing check-mate...

Haha, what a greedy fella. Reminds me of one of my own games years ago. We were both complete amateurs, but he had no idea what to do. I somehow ended up with all 8pawns and my original queen. I was going to turn all my pawns into knights and brilliantly decorate the board before mating, so I moved up all my pawns like a wave and just before my last pawn got to the 7th rank, I stalemated him. Sadest chess moment of my life.
