Finally, I have gotten my first OTB draw against a master-level player! In the following game, I played the White side of a KID, and was out of book knowledge by move seven. Please comment if you have any suggestions or thoughts about the game!
This was certainly a much calmer game than my first draw against a master...You played well, I can't help but think your opponent must have under-estimated you.
Great game. To bad you stopped notating, I would have liked to see the rest of it.
Thanks for posting this. Your annotations are really clear and I can follow your thought processes at key moments allowing me to better understand the game. Additionally it is just a generally good game. Well played.
I got to disagree about 8.de5 de5 9.Be3. Black is known to have no problems after 9...Ng4. White's most promising line is 9.Re1, played twice at the rapid Pono- Naka match last year.
Now back to the game- white's whole opening concept is a failure: it weakens the d4 square, and trades the important black-squared bishop without provocation. Black's play could probably be improved a bit, but this does not change the character of the position: after 22...Be8 black enjoys a stable positional advantage (two bishops, and the haunted d4 square).
"8.de5 de5 9.Be3. Black is known to have no problems after 9...Ng4."
Continuing with 10.Bg5! Qxd1 11.Raxd1 f6 I believe White is slightly better.
10...Qxd1 is a computer move, and it's no secret that computers not loaded with a proper opening book do not undestand crap about complex strategical openings like the Ruy or the King's Indian.
Black usually plays 10...f6 (10...Qe8 11.h3 h6 or even 11...f6 has been played several times at top level, and Black is doing very well) 11.Bd2 Nh6 is what good players apply, and have no issues. I will repeat one more time: no computer here, they just cannot grasp Black's long-term plan of planting a knight on d4, even as a pawn sac, or ...Nf7, ...c6 and ...f5, and have good play.
Your suggestion of Black to play Ng4 Bg5 Qe8 leads to poor winning chances for Black (23.9%)
Also 10...Qxd1 is a book move it is just not on the game explorer at chess.com
Oh, yes. Like Carlsen- Nakamura 0-1 (rapid game, does it count?), or Topalov- Milov 1/2 (again rapid), or Aleksandrov- Kokarev 0-1, or...
I have 932 games in my database after Qe8, and Black is scoring a fairly normal 45.7%. Filtering only games where both players have over 2500, it goes up to 49.6%, which is simply great.
10...Qxd1 is featured only in 3 games (Black scored 2 out of 3), with highest rated Black player 2406 (he drew against an unrated player).
This means nothing, of course: every schoolboy can tell you this move is antipositional, as it does nothing to exploit white's liabilities.
A few of the players that played the "faulty" 10...Qe8: Topalov, Nakamura, Kramnik, Shirov, Svidler, Movsesian, Gelfand, Motylev, Volokitin, Tkachiev, Ye, Vorobov, Milov... Apparently, all of them were unaware of the fact of white's advantage.
And...yes, Houdini will tel you that white has a healthy +0.50 or so... duh.
There is no point ranting against Houdini. He does not have either a positional instict, or any sense of humour.
