The shortest game I know of at the master level was 3 moves.

It was a correspondence game (like our "turn-based" games, but with moves sent by postcards in U.S. mail).

White played 1. d4.

Black responded 1. ... g6, and added an "if" move (like our pre-moves) that said, "if any then 2. ... Bg7."

White responded 2. Bh6 Bg7 3. Bxg7, and Black resigned.

I fell victim to a Scholar's Mate last week. Mated in 5 moves. Very embarrassing.

Lost to fools' mate against a kid who would become by best friend in high school. As he delivered mate, he looked up and said, 'did I mention I'm the president of the school chess club?' Yell

I never have beat him in a straight up game....been like 30 years now....

 Haha - the refutation! :-)  Remind me not to play that against 2. Bh6 next time! :-)

I've done Scholar's mate against kiddos, but against one who was a reasonable player, but played irreasonably, this was my shortest mate: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 Nxe4 4.Qf3 d5?? 5.Qxf7#

But my all-time favorite, and I recommend you play and see this game for yourself, was against my cousin. I was white again, of course, but this time won with an excellent sacrificial attack.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.d3 Nh6? 5.Bxh6! gxh6 6.Nxe5! fxe5 7.Qh5+ Ke7 8.Qxe5+ Kf8 9.Qxh8+ Ke7 10.Qe5+ Kf8 11.Qxc5+ Ke8?? 12.Qe5+ Kf8? 13.Qh8+ Ke7 14.Qxh7+ Kf6 15.Qxh6+ Ke5? 16.f4+!! Kd4 17.c3+ Ke3 18.f5+! 1-0 {Black resigns}

Because there followed 18. ...Qg5 19.Qxg5#.

As you would have noticed, my attack started with the fifth move and the very next move a sacrificial attack not difficult to spot followed giving me a tremendous lead. Of course, my older cousin had failed to foresee this.

My shortest game was today. 5 moves, nothing happened and then he resigned. Strange. He was new on this site but why accepting a challenge and then resigne after a couple of moves.Undecided

@ DavidForthoffer: LOL, I lke the story! Tongue out

My first game here - not only very short in moves, but also in time - 30 minutes all together!  I needed 30 mins here to improve my rating from 1200 to 1410 - maybe it's  a record? Laughing
