Is the 50 move rule  programmed into the chess.com system?

Another question from me:  Is the 50 move rule ever actually enforced in a real tournament?  Does it ever even come up?

Usually players agree to a draw before 50 capture-less, pawn advancing-less turns pass by, but it will be enforced if not (it does come up in endgames at times).

In a R+B vs R endgame, it's very important to the side down in material.

Except for perhaps scholastic tournaments, has anyone ever seen this happen in a real game?

Well... if the opponent refuses to accept a draw.... look at this... still playing!

The first thing that my dad taught me about chess is how to secure a win in K+R versus K endgames. Too bad black in the game above never learned.

You mean the Offer Draw button hasn't turned to a Claim Draw button after 50 unproductive moves? I'd report that game to Erik and ask him to force the draw. The last capture possible was done on move 60 removing the last pawn from the board. If black couldn't checkmate you by move 110, it's a draw since obviously there are no pawns and no captures were made since move 60.

Well Joseph, the 50th move actually will be the 111th so we'll see what happen when my opponent completes that last move (I'm waiting).

What I meant is that I offered the draw twice after I'd realised that my opponent was not able to win... but as you can see we are going to check if the system of Chess.Com calls an automatic draw or not.

I let you know Smile
Cheers
Pino

OK, after the 111th move the button "Offer Draw" turned into "Claim Draw". Anyway for the people that haven't seen before a 50 moves play.... that'it... it happens...Surprised

Cheers

Your opponent could have forced checkmate. It's not surprising that he played on; it's only (a little) surprising that he didn't know the mating pattern.

Definitely claim the draw before he figures out to mate you. If he couldn't figure out how to mate you with a rook and a knight in 50 moves he doesn't deserve to win.

It's enforced if one of the players claims the draw in an OTB tournament. If the other player tries to deny the claim, the TD can be called, and provided there's a valid scoresheet to go by, the TD will uphold the claim. Also, if the players are running low on time and not keeping score, they can request a TD to count the moves for them, so then it would be based on 50 moves from the time the TD starts counting. I've seen it happen before.
