In 1983, a year before he took on Anatoly Karpov for the World Championship, wentto  Nikic, Yugoslavia to join an all GM category 14 tournament (August 24-September 13 1983). Kasparov took first place with a score of 9 wins,  4 draws and 1 loss (to Boris Spassky).

One particular game versus GM Lajos Portisch of Hungary was given the 1983 Supreme Creative Achievement prize by the USSR Sports Committee
