This is a very rare type of checkmate.(I think)

 

This is not all that rare a checkmate, and often results from my King+Pawn endgames OTB.  It is however, quite annoying to pull off if your opponent knows the theory behind this type of checkmate.

Pretty much any game that ends with a king facing a king and a queen will end this way. It's one of the first things most people study when they learn endgame theory.

No, that's actually a common type of checkmate, if the opponent doesn't resign. If the queen was on the eight rank(except d8 and f8), that would have been another common one.

Well I've never used or have it been used on me.

It is very rare type of checkmate. More often everybody resigns before getting it.
