Four move checkmates are fine...

Trash talk would probably not be advisable! As long as you didn't talk trash I'm sure you still have a job! Cool

Bahaha. Hah. Um, well.

I think it is important to actually "greet" them... did you say hi, welcome and all the jazz? Not a lot of time in a 4 move game.

This, and the scholars mate, have to be drilled into newcomers soon. The sooner they learn how to counter this stuff the better. I think you chose to punctuate and interesting point, and gave this player an invaluable lesson - watch yourself at every turn. This player probably was lulled into the soft security of the opening, and never imagined this could occur. It that respect, I think you did right.

It was a good chess lesson. I bet you would've loved to see the look on their face, eg?

/thanks for the chuckle Jes.

Yeah yeah, I was just saying - there are a few cheap mates that a player has to know. "This" (ie. the mate you used, the "Fool's Mate"), "and other mates like the Scholar's" are all good to know. I didn't mean to say that the mate you used was the Scholar's, if that is how you took it. S'why I included a comma "and".

This, and...

probably as a greeter, it would be polite to not post the user's name in this post ...edit it out of the pgn file.  Undecided

Maybe they saw your rating and just wanted to get it over with quickly ;)

Did you offer a chess lesson? :).

Your opponent seems pretty new to Chess, but as long as you didn't rub it in his face, I'm sure he'll be fine, lol.

That's exactly what I would have played against his opening.

I feel comfortable giving freinds piece odds, colour odds, or choosing an opening I don't know so well... but I never play intentionally inferior moves.

<Azoth> How can you assess yourself as a bad greeter if you worried about your opponent? It appears admirable to me rather. Its a learning experience for you opponent, and it would serve him better than "freebie win" against a 2000+ player.

If you're worried, then how about a rematch? It lengthens the time with your greeter opponent and you could explain what he did wrong in the previous game. Personally, if they're not here to fool around, I'd be happy to help them out that way.

Nimzo33: "Personally, if they're not here to fool around, I'd be happy to help them out that way."

I know it was unintentional, but that is funny in lieu of Azoth mating him with the Fool's mate.

Haha, I see what you mean!

Just to clarify: I mean that if they're eager to learn! lol.

I've had this happen a couple of times.  The greetees I pulled the fast mate on never responded so I hope there were no hard feelings, but I guess I'll never know for sure.  I consider myself a friendly and helpful greeter.

Azoth,

As the game ended so quickly, as this persons greeter, you could always send them a message with the features link, and letting them know if they have any questions, they can ask you [as their greeter].

Where newcomers are concerned;

some talk, some don't at all

some are completely new to chess, some aren't.

None of us greeters are psychic [ except possibly for the next few posters here :P] so we never know the level of experience a newcomer has until the game starts..

Do your greeter speech with your newcomer, be that in the game chatbox or by private message -- don't over estimate or under-estimate your newcomers game play ... As a newcomer, we greeters have no way of knowing their level... sheesh i played a newcomer who turned out to be a  USCF 1800 rated player ...

I didn't know that at the time as this person didn't fill out their profile until a week or so later.

I'd just be happy if they made more than one or two moves a game before timing out!!!!

i statred with 12 greeters, 6 timed out on move 1 or 2, one requested to be made friends - i accepted warmly - then she timed out [she was playing white] without making any move! One asked for draw on move 3 - i agreed - was only two glad to get rid of him. [see my game archive - i have only very recently started playing correspondence chess here - so far completed only 3 rated games, 3 in progress. I started cautiously because I had no idea what rating would roughly match my strength/weakness :)]
