I'm new to chess, and have been studying books, Chess.com articles, Tactics Trainer, etc.  I have also played about 30 games here on Chess.com.

Observation:  Most of the articles, books, trainers, etc. present amazing games and extremely cool situations with dramatic sacrifices leading to mate.  In contrast, most of my own games end in fairly mundane battles to promote a pawn or fighting a slow battle either up or down a minor piece. (Not counting the games with major blunders).

Question: Are the amazing games we see in books and articles rare?  Are there thousands of other games that are played that we never hear about because they are too mundane?  (I'm not saying endgames are boring or essentially mundane.  In fact, I'm studying a book on them right now, and certainly have a ton to learn).

I would equate it to any other sport.  Since it's Super Bowl week, I'll use football as an example.  You'll see highlights of exciting plays each week, and the Super Bowl is what everyone watches.  But, there are 32 other teams that played 16 other games each this year.  And, yeah, most of them were pretty boring and will be forgotten.  But the big plays, important games, and intriguing stories are what get written about.

Because I'm not a very good player, the level that I'm at means that I still find all those mundane bits interesting... But I would suggest at a guess that amazing games are rarer at a lower level, probably becoming more common at higher levels, where the difference between winning and losing goes a lot deeper and is more complex than blunders or bad positional play.
