obviously I'm not expecting to see it live, you have to pay cash money for that, but I'm wondering if anybody knows if I can see the games somewhere a few days after they complete?

Certainly. chessgames.com is chess god regarding chess games. Scroll down a bit and on the left you have something like new games i think and you'll find anand vs kramnik, they will most likely be posted within few hours of the actual game or next day, as they usually are.

You may want to check out www.chessgames.com the day of the game. They usually do a good job of covering major events live like this. On the main page, and the day of the games there will be a big blinking sign on the left side saying live chess. Plus, it's a good site in general.

i realise it is all economics, negotiations and what the market will bear, but i saw on the site that they simply split the money regardless of result - is that always the case in the world chess championship or does the prize money, in part, sometimes follow the result?

No it is not normal, but due to the odd circumstances of the World Championship and the merging of the Classical and FIDE titles back together. I imagine that the match between the winner of this match and the winner of the Topalov-Kamsky match will not have an even money split.

re: watching the games. I imagine you can follow them as a guest on icc, but won't be able to listen to the broadcast. I'm not sure though as I'm a subscriber and I have not tried to follow a game as a guest.

Usually the official website broadcasts the games live for free. Maybe chess.com will also decide to relay the game in live chess?  :)

FICS (free) additionally has a relay where you can watch and chat about the moves with others. susanpolgar.blogspot.com often provides free commentary. ICC and PlayChess provide GM-level commentary, but they aren't free.
