To your question. Yes it does cost money to enter, the larger the tournament the more it can cost you i.e; the Newcaslte Open might cost about $40-$60 Aus just to enter, wheres the Australian Open could cost about $100-$180 maybe to enter. Yes u do infact win money in most tournaments IF u place first or in the top group or place 1st- 3rd in your rating division. Prizes can either vary due to number of players entered or have a set amount for total prize pool and often trophies as well. Here is a web site u might like to check out.  www.auschess.org.au

I have just finished my first year with my local club and have won 4 trophies. Challengers cup, Knock out cup, New comers cup and player of the year shield for winning the highest percentage of games against other clubs. I entered 2 congresses but only scored 3/5 and 2.5/5 in them as it was harder than I had thought playing 5 long games over 3 days.

I won my primary (elementary) school chess cup in 1989 and 1990.  Would have made it a hat trick had I not graduated, because there was no one there who could even put up a fight.  Funny thing is, the kid I beat in the first final is now in the fringe squad of the England rugby team (would have made the World Cup squad had he not injured his knee or something), and I bet he could put up a fight now (though maybe not at chess!).

I think its still the only thing I've ever won, except for the Bude Cricket Club Third Team Most-Improved-Player trophy for 1996, a kind of 'well done, you're the least crap player in the crap team' kind of award.  Still made me pretty happy, though.  Oh, and 50 quid on the premium bonds.

I placed first in the unrated division in the only tournament in which I've ever played.  It should be noted that I was the only player in that division and only ended with a score of 2.5/5.

I have won over 75 A Grade & Masters Titles in local competition! But they were in another lifetime as a basketball player Laughing

In Chess, I have managed to win a local handicap tournament, and two divisional prizes in open tournaments. My best effort was an equal 2nd in a smaller country tournament.

Currently sit on 2/3 in InterClub Matches, which pleases me greatly even though there may be no individual trophies up for grabs, it is nice to be doing my part for the team.

When I just got started in Illinois, I played in an Open Tournament.  I went from table 26 to 24, and then suddenly to 3.  Least to say, the decorated and signed boards were a little overwhelming to me.  I did not win that round, and ended up taking 2nd for All-Grade.

Alander, does winning regional junior events count? In that case you can count me in! Some of us have to go back a long time for their moments of glory Laughing.

I have been state champion (Georgia) twice, 87 & 96, both years I tied for first though, there wasnt a clear winner. I was the Alabama Open champion in 1994. I have been chess champion of the CSRA (Augusta Georgia area) and McDuffie County (where I was born). I have been champion of the North Augusta chess club many years ago and also the Augusta Georgia chess club. I have played team chess for teams in 3 different countries: USA, Germany, now Portugal. More recently I won the Lisbon championship and was awarded the NM title of Portugal. Just last May I played in the Georgia state championship (first time since leaving in 1997 for Portugal) and if I were still a resident of Georgia would be the current state champion........alas I no longer reside in Ga so am not eligible for it. I came second in the city championship of Schweinfurt Germany in 88/89 and was the only American ever allowed to play in it....perhaps the only non-German? (not sure) I also played for the strongest team from Schweinfurt (SK Franken) in the Landesliga Nord and playing 8 games for them went undefeated.....winning 4 and drawing 4. Now I hope to soon add some senior championships to my list as I am gettin old and fight hard just keep from losing ground. Laughing

I tied for second in a city tourney. No armaggedon games for us :) It was Swiss and I had a score of 4/5. I blew a game against the KIA because I was feeling the momentum and it got to my head a bit hehe.

Hmm, have to think way back, 73 was San Antonio, Texas Scholastic Champion and was member of the San Antonio Scholastic Team Championship Team at Lurther Burbank H.S., 74 was San Antonio City Open Co-Champion (with 3 others). Have won lots of tournaments and place well in my earlier days but lately  playing as a weak Class B player now a days! And doing more coaching then playing in tournaments visit our web site at www.windwardchess.org!

No recent tournament wins OTB, on-line doing slightly better in turn-base chess! We'll see how we do in this year's Hawaii State Championships! Hope to see you there, its held in Sept Labor day weekend, see www.hawaiichess.org for our schedule!
