Australia: the world's worst chess culture

Our land is wide, brown and beautiful. It bursts with exotic wildlife sich as the platypus, koala and potaroo.

However when it comes to chess, it's "knock knock who's at home?".

There are a few chess clubs. There are a few GMs. From time to time there might be a tournament. The whole scene is lifeless. In fact a kangaroo hung from a roof by Rolf Harris has more life in it than the chess scene here.

Then there are the..ugh..ick..forums. The main forum is called "Chesschat". The total IQ of all the paticipants is about 8. The combatants are:

Bill Gletsos: a mysterious chess entity of dubious ethics and motivation.

Kevin Bonham: mover and shaker in chess politics whose claim to fame is to have won the Tasmanian chess title about 6 times. I could coach a primary school kid for a month and they would win the Tasmanian title.

David Beaumont: the Luke Skywalker of the Australian chess scene, setting up an alternative chess forum called ozchess where the above dark forces of Gletsos and Bonham are not allowed.

Both forums sum up the 6 year old maturity level of Australian chess. They should both carry a warning:

"You are entering a realm where you must behave like a five year old, abuse other people and put people down in anyw ay possible. "

My advice to anyone in this country about crossboard chess: forget it. Play online. Crossboard chess here is totally, completely and utterly stuffed.

I envy things like the USCL. But there is more chance of Max Bygraves winning the Formula 1 drivers' championship than there is of the clowns who run chess here ever doing that.

The US chess scene is not the best. But it is light years' ahead of the nonsense here.

Please don't tell me to "get out there and make the scene better" rather than "whine" about it. Um. You spend 5 minuntes with Bill Gletsos. You will give up on such a romantic aim.

Maybe! But even so the warning on the forum Chesschat should have an added electric fence to deter people from entering.

Once again, I feel compelled to go on a crusade to prove that apathy doesn't equal ineptitude...

I have a feeling Borg Queen would feel dignified in defending her honor and the honor of her homeland, while I enjoy the thrashing...

I will neutralise and assimilate the Borg Queen.

I understand, I guess I wouldn't be so blunt in open forum, if I were in your shoes. I thought maybe you had an ulterior motive.

BTW, I notice I am blocked by you, I took you and your budz off block a long time ago. I only do that to shut you guys off, when you start ganging up on me. Then later, when I feel like a nazi, I unblock you...thought you'd want to know...

What's the concern about "bluntness," exactly?

I am tracking this for now and I am sure he (she), BorgQueen, will have someting to say about this.

Well, I guess that we are certainly all different in how we view the need for and use or don't use discretion. I guess I would refrain from making remarks that could be construed as objectifying a female chess.com member, especially in open forum. If it were a private conversation and no one was offended it by it, with all do respect to everyone's privacy involved, that isn't such a big deal for me.

I was just letting you know I personally didn't read the sites rules about such things. To me it is common sense. It isn't something you blurt out in public, unless you really want to offend someone, stir up trouble of some sort, or just make a fool of yourself. She could be elated that you heard that, or offended. I personally wouldn't want to open that can of worms.

If you were trying to dredge anything out of me, that could be held against me, I'm not so shallow or deeper than that, either way you look at it...

Yes. That is true. When the chess gets you down you can always wonder what a cross between Natalie Imbruglia and Delta Goodrem would turn out like.

    Interesting.

I don't know where you live linuxblue, but here in Adelaide, there is always some chess tournament going on and in Melbourne it's even more active.  The chess scene is far from dead.

Yes, chesschat is lame, but I didn't stick around long enough to even learn those people's names, let alone their attitude.

These over-exaggerations you are making are quite slanderous imo.

    lol ... yes... I am stacked!  ^_^

I hate when I feel like being mean to someone who deserves it...and I feel like they would either be too stupid to get the point I would make in rebuttal or I would have to come down to their level, so it would make enough sense to affect them in a "positive" way...
