I played a game of online chess once ( I wont mention names). I did much better than him/her and I had them in an unavoidable checkmate. Once they knew they were beaten they just stopped playing me, I saw him online 6 times playing everybody but me. I don't normally care about chess ethnic but I think its rude to just let yourself time out instead of resigning honorably or just falling in to the checkmate and hoping your opponent doesn't see it.
Yeah this happens to me too. It doesn't make much sense. I mean, why would you want to prolong the inevitable?
I guess this was in turn-based chess?
yes it was
Yeah, it sucks. They probably just can't bring themselves to fall on their sword. The game'll be over soon enough.
People need to realize that chess is a game, nothin serious.
pretty good band... don't get me wrong, they're no the specials but they were pretty good for the second wave.
Players that do this are indicating their level of maturity, and leaving nothing to the imagination. I, too, hate when this happens. Sometimes in live Internet chess a player will find himself in a lost position and just let the clock run out - which can be several annoying minutes.
I just tell myself that they don't know any better, and hope the next opponent has a cheerier attitude in general.
Is it rude to hand your opponent a "how to play chess" booklet after you win the game? Just asking.
I would have to say yes, but like i said, I'm not big into chess ethnic
I was just thinking of the rudest possible thigns players can do to each other. I guess threatening to punch someone is pretty rude too. I saw that in the last tournament I played in. Two old Russian guys were playing and one (accurately or falsley) accused the other of touching a piece. The accused guy was like oh no you didn't and threatened to punch the other guy in the face.
Wild times.
For turn-based correspondence-style chess (Online), I think this is a non-issue. You have timeouts and if they want to tap into their vacation-allowance, all the better.
As many have posted earlier on, this type of behavior is much worse during an actual OTB game. Even worse in clubs when the player initially insists on no clocks being used and then timesinks your entire evening trying to calculate that mythical 10-ply deep combination that will turn the game around.
What is additionally annoying is that most players "slow down" ONLY AFTER they have driven their game over a cliff. Until then, they're playing bullet chess...which is what gets them into bad positions to begin with.
