I play much blitz and sometimes there are interesting situations.

In my last game at the club on the last seconds I did not see a check and tried to promote a pawn, but before finishing the move I put attention that my opponent's time over.

My opponent argue that I lost because tried to make an impossible move.

Who is right ?

While there are codified rules for blitz, it's important to agree beforehand which ones will govern your games.

As I learned blitz,  there was no touch-move rule and your turn wasn't over until you punched your clock. By those standards you apparently could have claimed the win in your game.

Also, impossible moves could be made but the penalty was usually to retract the move and make a legal one. We also allowed a king to be captured if the opponent ignored a check.

If I recall correctly, blitz  now typically enforces touch-move, and one can't capture a king.

The rules here are close to what I always went by.
