If you were to recommend one book for a player rated between 1100-1200 what would it be?

I want to get my teeth into a chess book but I don't know what to go for.

1000-1200 means total novice . So books like Your First Step , Your first chess book etc are good. You will also benifit a lot by tactics book with one move combinations.

1100-1200 chess.com, so basic and fundamental is in order (just hoping to stem the flow of Reassess your Chess etc. suggestions).

Getting the hint Reassess your chess might not be the way to go...

At a rating of 1100-1200, you need to practice nothing but fundamental tactics problems.  In terms of books, you might try taking a slow and careful read through something like "Winning Chess Tactics" by Yasser Seirawan.  Between a book such as that and constant practice with tactics problems, you should have no problem making it up to 1400-1500 in relatively short order.

Once you reach this level, then a plethora of books will start to become potentially useful (refer to my profile for a complete listing of my chess library).

While I may or may not be typical (no idea), I started playing here on chess.com back in March 2008, with a rating in the 1100's as you reference above.  Eight months later, 400 matches later, a handful of books later, and around 3000 tactics problems later my rating is currently 1808.  Your mileage may vary but this should at least help to inspire your studies!
