Almost an afterthought as I was ordering something else from a leather worker, it came out very well. It is used with the chess books only.

For anyone interested in such an item, I'd suggest contacting some local leather workers and ask what they can do for you. The skill involved is not so much, though the rook mine made for me looks pretty decent.

Armed with the above picture as a starting point, you should be able to find someone who can give you what you want.
