    Could anyone explain to me the importance of the 7th rank?

    I have read this advice several places now, but I am not sure I understand the benefit.

    I'm not an expert, but it seems that rooks on the seventh rank restrict the opposing king to the eighth rank and threaten to gobble up pawns.

    yeah that is true.and if you have other pieces with them you can dominate the defence they have left
