yea, one of the down sides of this site. i for one hate vacation time. others here find good reasons to use it, to them any way. but i hate it. you can play only tournament games with no vacation time. but until them make standard games with no vacation, you just got to deal with it ,and move on

I think the positives outweigh the negatives here. Sure, some people use vacation time just to make people angry and carry out completely lost games. But the majority of them use it for the reason it was intended for. I used it recently when I went to NYC on vacation and it saved me hundreds of points.

simple.  Play in tournaments with no vacation time or stipulate it in your games.  I learned my lesson once... the first tournament I signed up here was put on hold almost two weeks because a guy went on vacation in a dead losing position (two pieces down).  Now I only direct or do tourneys with no vacation time.

Vacation time should be limited to like 2 a year or something.  That is garbage how you are being disadvantaged by "vacation abuse".

Players who take vacation time don't bother me at all. I have multiple games going, and when someone is on vacation I just concentrate on my other games.

By the same token, I not infrequently take 2-3 days vacation if I am away for the weekend or travelling for work, so that I don't time out. This is exactly what it is for and I don't see what the problem is.

Ultimately, if someone wants to burn 30 days vacation in a losing position, its all the same to me.

I'm with mistermax on this one.

I have no problem with vacation time. It's part of playing on chess.com... People are entitled to use it however they like.

I have never used any of mine, and as far as I can tell I probably will never have any reason to. My ISP is portable via a wireless USB transmitter that I can take anywhere I go.

But it doesn't bother me that people use vacation time... It's theirs to do with as they please. If they want to use it to 'piss me off' then let them try. It doesn't bother me because the game is just on hold while they are away. If I really have a winning position, then as soon as they come back, the game resumes and I win.

BTW, I make sure to write plenty of notes on games where my opponent takes vacation, so that I can remember all the ideas going on and all the moves/responses I am considering. I find that this helps a lot.

In regards to the OP - how can you lose on time when your opponent is on vacation? I don't understand this claim at all.

it works out but its a waste of vac. time, i need it for important reasons.

I'm still not understanding the problem...

    'before i get back':

Get back from what? This comment needs clarification.

'it'll auto set vac. time for me i believe..':

There is a setting by which you can turn that off, I believe.

Finishing all your other games has nothing to do with it, as far as I can see. I'm sorry if I seem rude or anything - not trying to. I just don't understand the issue you are concerned with. When the opponent comes back and makes his/her move, then the system lets you know that. How much effort does it take to log in to chess.com every day - even if it's only for 20-30 seconds - and find out if it's your move in any of your games?

So you are on vacation as well???

If so, then why are you complaining that your opponent is on vacation?!?

If not, I am clearly still misunderstanding something. Maybe I should just bow out of this discussion since I clearly do not get it.

Utimately, if someone wants to burn 30 days vacation in a losing position, its all the same to me.

It wouldnt bother me if i didnt have vacation for 30 days

What important reasons?  You are going on vacation but don't want to use vacation time because you need it for other important reasons?????

Gee, sorry for thinking vacation time is for vacations!  LOL

One of the things I am finding really funny is that it is a 960 game, your first, and you are having a cry about it!

If your vacation time is so very important to you, RESIGN the game!

The other thing I find funny is your responses, people are trying to work out how they might help and you are getting aggressive!  I can only hope all the people you are now playing see this and also go on vacation!  LaughingTongue outCool

I don't know what a 'sook' is, and I wouldn't attest to anyone's 'brightness' without knowing them, but I do find it funny that the OP deleted all his posts and left us holding the bag, so to speak.

I honestly just didn't get it... Glad I wasn't the only one!

Vacation abuse may lead to a warning or a ban to your account

I'm not bothered by people using their vacation, but I agree that users should be able to create the games with a no-vacation option as such ability exists for the tournaments.

How dare anyone go on vacation? I suggest you hunt them down like the dogs that they are, put their heads on pikes and post the pictures on your home page as a warning to all future opponents.

You'll get plenty of correspondence chess in the Big House.

The pundits will tell you that you agreed to a time limit plus unlimited vacation time. In my case not so; implicitly my agreement was for reasonable use of any required vacation time. Chess .com reply to my complaint of a recurring "vacation  abuse "was  that members may use vacation time as they wish.As this could involve perods as long as 60 days that  answer was basically unhelpful ,clearly unsatisfactory.Too much time can be wasted seeing if game has been resumed..or not.

There should be a limit of say 2 times for recurring extensions  and thereafter permission should be mandatory.

The bolding above was done by me.

There is no implicit agreement.  If it is not stated it does not exist.  Even less is there an agreement to your definition of "reasonable use".  There is an explicit agreement to abide by the rules of Chess and the rules of Chess.com, the later of which provides for n days of vacation to be used as the member sees fit.  Your personal prefences do not override the rules of the site.  Why should your opponent need your permission to use his vacation time?

I wouldn't use it, no matter where I go I'll find a way to log on and make my move.
