Anyone watching the final round of the M-Tel Masters? Carlsen's three pawns down against Shirov but has strong pressure down the half-open g-file. He only needed a draw to win the title though, so not sure why he's playing so aggressively.

Unless he's planning to sacrifice on g3...

Yep, he just resigned. I guess this means Shirov's won the tournament. Wonder why Carlsen went into such a reckless line when he only needed a draw? I suppose he didn't know that until Topalov drew.

Maybe I'm not looking far enough but why did he resign?  His position doesn't look terrible . . .

Yeah that's it. I just ran the position through Crafty and it gives the following line at 14 ply:

30. ... f6 31. Rxe5 fxe5 32. Nf6 Rf8 33. Nh5 Qg5 34. Qxg7+ Qxg7 35. Nxg7 Kxg7 36. b4 Rxf5 37. b5 Rf6 38. Re1 e4 (Score: +4.45)

Also looks like Chucky might finally win a game.
