I have an extra set of chess pieces and I plan to construct my own unique chess board using slate tile in a wooden picture frame molding and I was wondering if  anybody has ever made their own chess board and had any advice?

Make it out of something durable. I have not made my own, but you do not want to put hard work into something and see it shatter into a million pieces.

Tile in a proper backing is durable and I don't intend to drop it.

Just make sure the square in the lower right hand corner is white.  It's surprising how many times you can find sets that have a definite orientation and have a black square where it should be white.
