I am considering going to visit my local chess club and was wondering if anyone had any advice or stories what they are generally like. I emailed the club president and he said to come in anytime. Do you usually just walk in and someone will challenge you or something? I have only played chess online and with friends so the 'club' experience will be new to me. But i am excited to check it out. Thanks for any info. :)

I would introduce myself to the club president and I am sure he would introduce you around to the other players.  He should also help  you find opponents with similar skills.

Well I was a complete beginner when I went to my local chess club, and things went well for me. The people there were really nice and cool (cept for a couple). I can't remember what really happened, but not much. I played one game I think, with my current chess coach. Of course I was 13 then so your results will vary, lol. Other than that, I just went meeting people and watching a local FM play a game. Now I go there every week or every other week.

It will vary somewhat from club to club, but, for the most part, I find that chess club members are very open to new members and try to be helpful in getting you assimilated.  Chess players have the same personality variances others have but generally speaking they reach out to make newcomers feel comfortable.
