Rybka is clearly the best at the moment. However, if you're interested in a chess engine and GUI that runs on Linux, Windows and OS X, Deep Shredder 12 isn't far behind.

The best is your own personal chess playing experience.

Nothing can beat that.

(in my opinion)

Lol, if you can memorize 512 played games. And can find all the best moves by yourself. If you cant, you need engine. To see what you missed, and what was good in game.

To be honest, I've found the chess.com computer pretty good at the analysis of your own games. The only problem with it is that it is inflexible, in that you can't import PGNs but have to submit your own games played on this site. It is only (!) ~2500, but that's plenty good enough for me.

I don't think your own personal chess playing experience would have much chances against Deep Rybka 3. Smile

Amen.

But, if you must have free, get Arena and a handful of free engines. http://www.playwitharena.com/ Arena is a useful GUI that supports UCI and Winboard engines. You can download it with AnMon 5.6, Dragon 4.6, Hermann 2.4, Nejmet 3.07, ProDeo 1.5, Ruffian 1.05, Rybka 2.2 free, SOS 5.1 for Arena and Spike 1.2--several strong engines there. As you feel the need, you can install other engines.

Hmmm I kind of agree on your opinion RealDarren but I think it will still be better if I'm going to use an engine.

Well one main reason why I want good engine is to basically analyse my previous games and the chess player's game. Right now I'm using winboard but I'm still looking something better.

I agree on what you said Sir Rex but the problem is  at the moment I can't afford something that so expensive.

The best chess engine took a lot of effort to develop so it shouldn't be a surprise that it costs money. However, one good free option is SCID and Stockfish (best free engine).

You know, the chess.com analyzer is just perfect for what you need.  Of course, if you want to cheat in your games like many other pathetic noobs on here, the more experienced players will know and you will get kicked off after being reported.  In which case, you are right, you dont want to spend money on it.

Of all the posts throughout the forums why is it that I never see any mention of the Rebel/Rebel Decade chess engine? The freeware version (Rebel Decade) is ~2300 ELO...the strength of the fully enabled Rebel is ~2500 ELO - either of which would be more than enough for the majority of players here. Anyoneelse ever used either engine?
