strange .. c3 is a dark field...  but mondriaan became very strange in my opinion. thanks dekaleaas... the contrast between 2 styles could not be bigger

A few years ago I was sitting in another developer's office here, staring idly at the Escher print on her wall. This print was a long, thin strip that went almost all the way around the top of the office walls. It showed many different geometric motifs merging from one form to another, in typical Escher fashion. It suddenly dawned on me that the chess pieces in one section of the print were arranged in a real chess position.

yeah i am an Escher fan .. and this work (reproduction hihi) was in my math class.. in my home town (Baarn) you often see his Art because he lived en worked here most of his life.

he was a school teacher and made his art in his spare time.... it's sad that he was not given the respect he deserved... only later in his life, a little respect from america, first from sientist and later hippies....

And also sad to see wat kind of art was and still is respected and populair.

"The Chess Game" in posting #1 is a well-known painting by John Singer Sergent.

I put a lot of chess-related art in an webpage called Surrealism and Chess.

i saw another very beautiful picture, i cannot remember the artist name.

Van Mander's 1604 painting of a game between English playwrights Ben Jonson and William Shakespeare.  The symbolism has been debated for a century or more, but for chessplayers it has always been about the game.  What is the position, what is the move Shakespeare is making, what caused Johnson's surprise mid-move?

It is difficult because the set is rather uniform in appearance, and of course we don't know what piece is in the Bard's hand, where it was, or where it is going.  But that hasn't stopped speculation, beginning with a two-page spread in the American Chess Bulletin in 1915, and also a feature article of several pages in the first issue of the beautiful Chess World, which also featured Fischer's Top Ten of all time and Benko on time pressure.

i didnt get the c3 painting. but its art!   lol

i glued a set together on a board, and hung that as art. think i will again, but hang it outside near where i play.

Picou 1867 - Jeu d'eschecs Indien, depiction of a "living chess" game in India.

Italian artist, Raffaello Sorbi, painted this and gave the creative title, "The Chess Players."
