What are some of your favorite films about chess, of films that have chess in them?
Ive recently come across Joueuse (Queen to play) and really liked it. Are there any other films about chess? Or good documentaries that anyone recommends?
"Searching for Bobby Fischer" was a good one especially sinceit was about a real person. Too bad it put Bruce Pandolfini in kind of a bad light, but it had real appeal for the younger crowd. "Queen to play" was also pretty good.
I had seen Searching for Bobby Fisher a long time ago, but re-watched it after I got into chess and really enjoyed it. The scenes in the park were the best in my opinion, and I liked how they put real players in the background cast.
I also liked when young Josh Watkin walked into the chess club and the real crazy guy was stressing about chess moves.
in Queen to play, who is the guy she plays first in the tournament? is he an actor, or real chess player? I know I have seen him before but I cant remember where.
got me. I'll get back to you.
I saw "Uncovered", a 1994 film based on Arturo Pérez-Reverte's book "The Flanders Panel". Kate Beckinsale was in the film and very different than the image that we have of her.
I recommend it, a part from chess you can see very nice pictures of Barcelona
nice, thank you, I will check that movie out
Brooklyn Castle is a new one that is pretty good. Its a documentary about a strong New York inner city school. I look forward to checkin out some of the movies you guys mentioned!
Not a film, but the musical, Chess, is pretty darned amazing. There's a DVD of a concert version from 2008 that goes by the title "Chess in Concert".
"Geri's Game" is a cute, funny short film by Pixar that features an elderly man playing chess in a park. I won't spoil it, but the ending is pretty funny.
There is also "Knights of the South Bronx" with Ted Danson which was okay.
I am patiently waiting for the DVD of "Brooklyn Castle" to come out so I can see it too.
"Geri's Game" was a really short but fun video with a great ending!
Don't be fooled by the cover image of 'The Other Man' (2008) which shows the 2 main characters (Liam Neeson, Antonio Banderas) playing chess. There’s not a great deal of chess in the film but worth a mention I thought. I don’t think it should make this thread really, just thought I'd let you know that it has a misleading cover. However, it’s not a bad film.
