Chess is Music

Chess parallels the development of a classic sonata, at least the first movement.  White begins with a theme, almost always assertive play c4, d4, or e4.  Sometimes black responds just as assertively, perhaps with a simple inverted key.  Something like the closed Ruy Lopez or a Petroff.  The two themes develop similarly at first, loudly at first, but coming up against each other then soften and add complexity as each tries to find a way to weave itself around and through the other theme.

A modern opening would meet the bold G or C major (does it have to be E major?) of e4 with a quiet line inviting the first theme to grow bolder.  Many times (lines with f4, Byrne Pirc and others) white becomes positively violent and then must find the strength to continue the furious theme because once committed a pause can become deadly.  Black meanwhile waits quietly until there's is a sudden thrust, the black theme grows with e5 or c5 and the struggle can become a chaotic mess.

I think one could make a musical composition out of every well played chess game

it's interesting to me that chess players always want chess to be a metaphor for something.    chess is this or chess is that.  dudes, it's just chess.  and chess is pretty bad ass.

Chess, music, prose and poetry, when well done it is all related.

wait, you think chess is related to writing?  why can't chess just be chess?  is it not good enough to just be itself?  i kinda think it is.

Anything can be appreciated just for itself.  You can listen to Mozart and hear a pretty melody without any clue what is going on in the work.  There's nothing wrong with that lack of depth, it's just that it's shallow.

i'm not sure what any of that means.  but what i do know is that chess is cool all by itself.  i don't need to pretend that chess is a poem or a steely dan song.

Steely Dan is terrible, chess is nothing like that except when you blunder into a royal fork against a three year old.

There's no pretending that chess is art, it is art.  Not everyone can recognize this and that's O.K.

right, and not everbody can accept that chess is simply chess.  we don't need no stinkin' metaphors.

what does being gay have to do with it?  i assume you're calling him homosexual...  i'm not seeing the correlation.  are homosexuals more inclined to use metaphors in their descriptions?

hahaha...  that's awesome.  not subsricibing to a lame metaphor has nothing to do with one's ability to appreciate the "true" beauty of the world.  luckily james joyce was ok with literal language.

Like any troll he can't help describing himself in blurted out phrases.  It's a sad disease.
