Where do you think chess sits?

Sport? Game? Somewhere in between? Has your opinion changed over time?

Yes, let us all have a good rant, and channel our rage at others.

well first I thought of it as a kind of a sport (spectators, money, coaching etc.) and but then sometime I think of it as is just a game.

Have you read the other threads on the very same subject?

chess is not a sport because there is no physical aspect other than moving the pieces around. it is more than a game because of the elements of the game such as strategy, mental toughness, mental exercise and the fact you can learn from your mistakes and take your play to the next level. in a sport your physical ability will allow to go so far and thats it, with chess the sky is the limit

It's a game.  Why is this a bad thing?  Go is a game.  Poker is a game.  They're all really good games.

There's nothing objectively superior about being a "sport" vs being a "game."  They are what they are.

chess is an arrogant game where the players constantly argue over whether chess should be considered a sport (because for some reason they feel sports are better than games), or chess should be considered more than a game (because they feel that chess is obviously superior to other games).

hate to burst everyone's bubbles out there, but chess is literally a board game. it's quite easy to make this distinction since it uses a board and it is obviously a game.

It's a board game. How many times is this subject going to arise? I must have had this conversation a thousand times over the years. Just look up the definitions for "sport" and "game" respectively and see which is the best match.

That's where the problems come up.

So many people in so many walks of life have strangely vested interests in having their favorite pastimes labeled "sport," that the very definitions have had to be warped and tweaked to accomodate this strange breed.

    Fishing?  Sport.

    Driving?  Sport.

    Darts?  Sport.

    Scrabble?  Sport.

The New York Times Sunday Crossword?  Sport.

    Eating hot dogs?  Sport.

Tell me about it. There are fruitcakes at Sportsnow.com who list themselves as "Athletes" with their discipline being chess. I always knew chess players were an odd bunch but damn....

That is a good point, and I like it. I guess I never thought of it that way...

Chess is the only 'challenge' (be it a game or sport) where there is no luck involved. The only luck possibly involved is that you are pitted against an opponent that is not as talented as yourself. (written by me just now!)

If playing video games professionally can be called "e-sports", then I believe it's not a crime to call professional Chess a sport.
