If I understand correctly, you're looking for a free chess program to play against or do analysis with? The downloads section here has some free stuff:

http://www.chess.com/downloads/playing+programs+engines?page=1

I haven't downloaded any of these things yet myself, but Rybka 1.0 beta looks interesting. Also, they have Fritz 5.32 here, you might want to take a look at that. As for myself, I bought Fritz 8 a couple years ago. About a month ago I picked up a copy of Chessmaster 10 for $9.99 at Future Shop - not expensive at all, well worth it and I'd highly recommend it.

Hope that helps.

Edit: Crosspost with kohai.

I don't get it then. What exactly are you looking for? There are tons of free chess engines on the downloads page here. Perhaps I misunderstood your original question?

I downloaded the rybka beta a couple months ago.  In Fritz shootout at 9 ply, rybka will often choose different moves than the fritz 9 engine.  So Rybka gives some additional ideas.

If you want rybka in itself go to http://www.rybkachess.com/. It´s the official homepage.

You can get the beta version of rybka 1.0 there for free. Unfortunately, it´s a comercial chess engine, so they don´t make the full new versions available for download.

Just for you know - and don´t get surprised - rybka is an UCI chess engine, it won´t run for itself. You need to get a chess graphical user interface such as ARENA, FRITZ, SHREDDER, CHESSBASE... in order to do it.

I think ARENA is the only free chess interface of those. You can get it at the official homepage: http://www.playwitharena.com/. But, if you have some extra cash, I recommend you to get ChessBase. It´s a really good program.

Like someone said ChessMaster is very good too, but you need to do some 'tricks' to run an UCI engine in it. I don´t know about that, sorry.

Be sure to check the installation section in rybka homepage for compatibility and help info.

Hope it helps - and is not too late. haha

See ya.
