1) If you don't have time to play out the whole time control, don't play it. A player never has to resign to you.
2) There is nothing rude about not using the chat or not saying gg at the end. Plenty of people choose not to use the chat feature and are just looking to play some chess.
3)Disconnecting and letting the time run out is rude, but take solice in the fact that you'll get the win when the time does run out.
Per capita I reckon chess has one of the highest percentages of immature, stuffy, cantankerous people. In no other game have I had a sizeable portion of players disconnect from a game, leaving me out to dry until their timer runs out; and if not that then just leaving without saying good game - YAH! without saying GOOD GAME, can you believe it???
Maybe it's because chess, unlike other games, seems to command some level of intellectual respect amongst people. So to a lot of players it's not about winning or losing a game but about being smarter or dumber.
That's no excuse though. If you don't have common courtesy you're a big fat doo doo head. Comma.
The other day I was playing a game in which I ended up with 2 rooks and a pawn 1 move from promotion against a king and 3 unpassed pawns. I had about 2.5 minutes on the clock against his 11. Something came up and I had to go and so I requested that the person resign since the game was clearly over. Well no resign came or any acknowledgement of my request (I guess he was thinking diligently about what to do with those 3 pawns??). I ended up resigning and went on my way. Geez Hamm, again?
Ever since I started playing chess online I've made a point to say "gg" (good game) after every game, win or loss. The void of any kind of sportsmanship I've experienced while playing here has made me even more determined to keep this resolution.
I've actually never recieved a gg before I've first given one and I've played a good amount of games by now. I think most chess players would do well to ease up on the tactics trainers and brush up on their human training a bit.
Peace!
