Chess programs for analysis

People don't listn at the Game Analysis forum, so I'll try here...

I just started to analyse my games afterwards with Shredder. What do you think about it? I like how it gives you a diagram showing who has the upper hand during the game, thus revealing where mistakes were made etc.

But do you think there are other good tools for game analysis in Shredder or in some other program? One feature in Shredder makes the computer go through the game and suggest other lines, but that is quite too much information to go through. I would like AI-generated text messages, like : "here, you weaken your position because you allow... etc", or "this will allow your opponent to eventually gain material", or even "Key move, well done!".

What's analysis tool would you suggest?

Personally I think it's awesome to run your game through a computer and see what it would do. Then play through those lines to figure out why it recommended that. People respect computers because they are capable of playing subtle chess...the move might not make the most onbious sense at first, but 5-10 moves later the picture clears up.

Yea, but 5-10 moves later, studied at like 10+ places in a game - that takes some time and effort! It would be nice with a program that would express the reason behind better moves in a brief and clever way. Or the reason to NOT make a specific move...

Fritz has a natural language analysis feature which you might find useful. Some of the comments are strange, it keeps on about getting cats out of trees and bulls off ice according to my neighbour who has Fritz.

That would be nice, but you would need true AI for that. Computers simply can't do this; they have no understanding of the game at all, but simply perform calcualtions. Any program that claims to do this will give you as much erroneous feedback as anything else. However, humans _are_ capable of understanding computer analysis with a little effort, so put in the effort! What you are asking for is a free GM-strength chess coach you can download from the internet.

If you want your computer to show you why NOT to make a move, feed the position to Fritz and make the move, with the PC playing the other pieces. Very quickly you will be shown what's wrong with your move...
