Well, Convekta's Chess Tactics for Beginners and CT-ART have alot of loyal customers. Personal Chess Trainer is another popular alternative. CTB focuses on 2-move combinations, CT-ART focuses on deeper combinations, PCT provides a mix... I like all three, and they each provide months or even years of value.

Chess Assistant is more like a chess database than training software. If you want a database, know that Chessbase is more popular and SCID is free.

I wonder where the best place for middle range players like myself is.  I could do with some training in deeper endgames.  (I know the basic endgames)

    Dear Muskytherat,

The strength of a computer program like the 'Little Partner" really depends  on the speed of your PC and also on the amount of ram you have on board.  On a fast speed "dual-core" PC, with enough ram on board, the program can be formidable even at the easy level!  This is because the Hash-Table that the program creates in its memory will be very big for it to draw on what it has learnt, without using its "brute" processes  of working out every possible reply to your previous move.  Hence the best test of your playing abillity is to play against humans. Go for it, man!   Best of luck.
