Chess.com Android app - computer is too weak

Reposting from Android group (for wider audience).

Do you play against computer on your Android phone(play computer)?Have you noticed how the computer opponent is too weak? (Other apps are better :aart bik chess, droidchess...).  Embarassed

It always play the same moves, apparently has no opening book.

When I have some time to spare (in train, during some boring presentation, when waiting ...), I play against it, but it annoys me that it keeps playing the same openings over and over again.

And I have a variation that will always win against 5-10 sec computer in under 15 moves.

IMO the app should have some opening book included, so it could play different variations.

Other chess apps have it, so I guess it shouldn't be too difficult to include it.

    OK, here is it.

    SPOILER ALERT

Guaranteed win on 5-10 seconds, on 1 and 3 seconds it plays Scandinavian, so it's a different game. On 30 seconds it sometimes fall for it.

On 1 min it usually does not fall for it, still, 1 min per move is too much for a casual play.

First time I played it, I just tried the line to see if comp will fall for it, and it did. But, after that first time, I repeated the experiment for 10-20 times, and unfortunately it always work. Boring Cry

don't look at the diagram if you don't want to know the busting sequence:

No. Lot of players that have Andriod are not member of Android group, therefore I thought it could be a good idea to post it here as well.

But, it seems that weakness of the chess.comm android app it's not something people are bothered with. :-)

I play against it alot. Guess I must be rubbish as 10s whoops me half the time, but I've never done any fancy opening other than 1.c4

Perhaps you could try my sequence, just to try to verify if computer will play the same moves.

I haven't played the cpu yet but I think the app is great. Runs really well on my G2.

chess.com app is more dedicated for normal everyday things you do on chess.com.

But if you want a casual computer sparing partner you might look elsewhere.

IMO it's not so much about the computer strength, what annoys me is that it always play the same moves, always.

No opening books, no variations, nothing.

For example on 1-3 sec, against e4 it always play Scandinavian defence.

And on 5-10 seconds it always play the sequence where he falls for a classic bishop sacrifice.

I would wish if chess.com could introduce a small opening book, say up to 5th move.

It shouldn't be so difficult, other programs have it.

Dragec i can see your point, but the apps were meant as an extension of the site not a replacement :)  I can still play my online games while i'm on the move.

I also do, and I contribute in the forums, play vote chess, etc ...

But, from time to time you do need a computer sparring partner. Especially if your data traffic is expensive(if you're a prepaid user, or when in roaming). Cool

I haven't tried roaming, and i'm a prepaid user. Will be interesting to see how much i get charged to play from abroad in a couple of weeks.

Bobby, did you play against comp on android?

You have a 1,5,10,30 sec and 1 min per move.

Obviously, for a casual game it's too much to wait 30 sec or 1 min (per move) for comp to play. When putting it on a "reasonable" 5-10 sec, it always plays the sequence that will get him mated in 15 moves.
