Interesting, though how anyone involved can be charged with public drunkeness is strange seeing that they were in the home/apt of one of them.

Never drink alcohol then play chess.  Everyone should know this and thanks for the article.

It never ceases to amaze and annoy me, that those not yet old enough to legally drink, are full of advice for the rest of us. Live a little first sonny-boy, then dispense your homely advice!

Ray_Brooks,

So you disagree... you think drinking and playing chess is a good idea? I don't know anyone who can honestly say they play better drunk (note having a drink or two while kicking back and having a game is a different story).

Just thought your comment was rude and not necessary. I agree with you rgp89.

I've never played chess drunk, but I definitely juggle fire better when I'm drunk. I'm a little pyrophobic, so being drunk takes away that fear without messing up my finely honed juggling reflexes (unless I'm REALLY drunk). Tongue out No, I'm not kidding.

So lemme get this right... some guys get hammered while playing chess? No offence but chess aint the sort of game you bring beers to play... you most likely bring a bottle of fine wine or some juices or sumptin...Undecided

Not really... it's not like chess players are snobs, are they :S ? No offense, but it's not like most of the games in this site are super high quality  - so who are we to criticize someones fun?

I have played accompanied by coca cola, nice wine, beers, and even a full BBQ. I took a chess set out in a party and it was occupied the whole evening - I was surprised so many of my guests were interested.

BTW - it was blitz and beers were flowing freely. No one played a masterpiece but it was fun. Anyone opposing that here?

Lesson to learn - drunkenennes and chess is ok, intoxication and firearms is NOT.

I live in the newscast area of the incident. The event wasn't related to the game of chess, per say. One man was trying to show another that chess helps in clarifying a confused mind. The troubled young man chose to stay with his problems rather than focus on the game.

Here's a tip I learned years ago:

When playing against a guy with a gun always open with f3 followed by g4.

Historically, Blackburne claimed that being slightly drunk made him play better.
