Ok, so ive met several mathematicians at chess events. I, myself, plan to go to college for mathematics. Is there a connection between chess and mathematics? By this I mean in the brain. Is there a certain area in your brain that attracts you to things that involve or purpose 'problem solving' type situations? If you love math are you more likely to love chess?

I don't know that ... but this much I do know: if both of your parents are obsessed with chess, you aren't likely to exist in the first place.

In my opinion, a chess players would be "good" (though they might not be interested) at mathematics meaning he/she will have a natural flair for the subject. However I am not sure if people "good" at chess would also be good at math (though they might be interested).. Well as they say, correlation doesnt always imply causation you seeWink..

    Cheers,

Certainly NO. Math is for mathematicians and chess is for chess players.

I would say it is more likely. That's how it is for me and for many others. I do think it's because of how it uses the left brain, and problem solving, calculation, as well as logic. This applies to both math and chess. So people who like math will certainly look into chess a little as well as some card games like poker or rummy. However the converse statement is less true as some players just think of it as an art and use it to escape from things like math!

There is a connection but I think its only hardcore mathematicians who are interested in it.  Algorithms, analysis, application, calculation, theory.  I hate maths.  Love Chess though. Smile

I also hate math's, and am totally more right brained. I absolutely love chess though. I think it can attract many areas of the brain; The calm, calculating left region, and the more whimsical, creative right brain. I love that every single game can be different, the multiple layers of play, the dynamic competition, the beautiful lines and tactics you can create each and every game... whats not to like?
