class player versus Fritz 12

    Here is the big one that got away. I had Fritz 12 on the ropes for most of the middlegame, which as a 1600 player is tough to do (I only bought Fritz 12 a week ago and so far I've had one draw in 19 moves by repetition and another in 22 moves + I lost an equal Rook and pawn ending where I had a vastly superior pawn structure and the more active King)

    How many ways did I fail to achieve a decisive plus?

    You would have to show me the win after 22.Rg5 Ne8, or even where White stands clearly better. You may be right, but positions like Black's are often surprisingly resilient. But while I don't think 12...h5 was a mistake, I think 12...a6 was better, and Black is fine.

    It's really amazing how much flexibility there is an Black's game. Looking at the position after the opening with my old, Reinfeld-trained eyes, it looks as if Black is terribly cramped, but in reality, he seems to be doing just fine.

    Here's a draw I got against Fritz 12 in Game in 10

    . I had over 8 minutes left on my clock, Fritz, a little over 3.

    In the following game, White should not have wimped out. If Fritz plays into this variation, I will definitely play for the win. I just missed a simple winning resource for White.

       I've had a blast against F-12 but haven't done rated yet, still on friend mode with a handicap of 59. One of these days I'll start my long road to 1800

    Here is an attempt by White to clamp down on a dubious strategy for Black, an early e6/d6 without first playing Bb4. Black allowed a draw by repetition without waiting to see if I could get in g3/Bg2 with an absolute bind on the d5 square. At the end, I could have tried for more with 8.Be3/Kh1/f4 which appears to render 5...d6 as a questionable stategy for Black. Black can't get in either d5 or b5 (White meets a6

     with a4) and can only react to whatever threats White makes.

    I wonder who the strongest active chess player is currently on this site.

    The Wilkes-Barre/Traxler Attack is one of the most ferocious openings if you go in for the wild 5.Nxf7 variations, and one of the quiestest, most positional variation if you go into the 5.Bxf7ch variations where Black has no compensation for the pawn. Here against Fritz 12 I must have missed a half dozen wins.

    Here is clear practical evidence that the Wilkes-Barre/Traxler is busted. This game was played at Game in 5 where Fritz 12 is a monster. The chess wizard isn't working so here is the game score. I was better throughout the game but missed a nuance. I had to play 33.a3 instead of 33.a4

    1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 Bc5 5.Bxf7ch Ke7 6.Bb3! Rf8 (Qe8?! 7.d3 h6 8.Nf3 d6 9.Be3 Bg4 10.Nbd2/Qe2/O-O-O +/-) 7.d3 d6 8.Be3!
