I am tired of chess.com my online chess page being completely brutalized and taken over by this classmates.com ad the thing over extends well over 1/3 of the whole screen and makes it really hard to use the tool bar at the top of the page. Is there anyway to somehow make that ad more agreeable with that page?

You know that annoying ad with the map of the united states which says "mouse over your state" while it randomly mouses over the states for you, and to make it worse there is 2 pictures one of a man and one of a woman, and at the buttom the thing says "She married him??!!" "They have 7 kids???"

Please remove this or fix it. This is quite a nuisance and a disservice.

For what it's worth i'll put in my 2 cents, i'm not a paying member yet but soon will be and as a free member i can say the ads at the top of the screen are not that big of a deal i can live with it. Erik and his crew can't continue to provide the GREAT site we have and completely foot the bill i'm sure it gets pretty expensive. Some people just want everything in life without a little inconvienence.

I think his point was just that the format of the ad negatively affects both the aethetic appeal of the page and his ability to use the menu bar.  His reasoning is just that it's an annoying ad and he (and I, for that matter) wishes we could help chess.com pay for itself by viewing something that flashed less and moved less and thus fit in a little better with the rest of the very aesthetically pleasing website.

Advertisers tend to be willing to pay more when their ads stand out. Ever notice that commercials are louder than normal television programming?

Yes, I am well aware of how the ad industry works.  Pop-up ads stand out too and they definitely get seen, but most reputable sites now avoid using them because they are so annoying.  I think justwrightin simply wanted to make a point and I came to his defense because I agree with him.  I don't expect the ads to come down, but I think it is good for us to voice our opinions so the chess.com team can keep itself abreast of our opinions about the site.  It isn't all the ads, just the classmates.com ads.  They just look cheap and dumb.  Some of the other ads fit the site and its population quite well.

Rael my reasoning was not to strip funding for chess.com by asking them to remove all ads. My reasoning was geared toward the fixing or removing of a certain ad. Beside, why is this any of your concern? You obviously do not have any ad problems. Your input is hardly valid.

Could you use google adsense? I heard it provide only text ads which could be less annoying to most of us

we will be totally revamping ads over the next week or two. hopefully we will be able to have more control. right now we just don't have control over the types of ads that are shown that much. we're working on it. free members will be seeing more ads, but hopefully less intrusive ones.

If you don't like the ads then buy a membership. If you're too cheap then quit complaining.

My opinion lies somewhere between those of ericmittens and the original poster.  If these things can be easily changed to be less annoying, good.  If not, buy a membership.

ericmittens, your language is rather offensive, I do not know whether or not it has anything to do with being too cheap. The question is whether or not you are able to meet the financial obligations.

It's under $30 for a year membership, if you can't afford $30 a year then you probably can't afford a computer or an internet connection so there should be no worries anyway!

none of the opinions on this thread represent the position of Chess.com. :) we are grateful for all members who are doing whatever they can to support us, be it with premium memberships, or just playing games and having a good time. for some, chess is life. for others, they come and play a few games a year. those who want access to extra features will pay. those who don't want the features and don't mind ads, won't.

we love you all ;)

Thanks, Erik.  I am new here, but I really love the site.  I have never used a site of any kind that works so well pretty much all of the time.

Aren't I helping out by clicking on the ads occasionally?  Some of you are so adept at chess.com evangelism I think Erik should be paying you! Laughing
